The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School yesterday released a five-year strategic plan charting a course for democracy and the law, rooted in the people of Detroit. Founded in 2011 to honor the life and legacy of the late Judge Damon J. Keith, the Center will pursue a vision in which residents hold real power over the decisions that shape their communities. The Center also launched a redesigned website at djkcenter.org.
The plan organizes the Center’s work around three pillars: reshaping local democracy so that residents themselves exercise the right to govern; building an ecosystem of lawyers and legal workers to support the movement for racial and social justice; and activating the Center’s archival collection of African American legal history as a living resource for the present.
“This plan is our vision for building democracy and power in Detroit, where the people themselves exercise their right to govern and have real power over the issues that impact their communities,” said Angel McKissic, director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.
Peter Hammer, Faculty Director of the Center, said, “This strategic vision marks an important point of transformation in the evolution of the Keith Center, at a critical moment in our nation’s history. ?We are hitting on key catalysts for change: robust movement lawyering, disrupting structural racism, and doing the spadework necessary to cultivate an authentic multiracial democracy. ?Rooted in the Judge’s legacy and guided by our strategic vision, we are confident as we face our future and ready for the challenges ahead. This is the future Detroit deserves.”
