On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Cooley Law School hosted Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel during a Michigan Human Trafficking Commission Mixer panel discussion.
Held in partnership with the Michigan Anti-Trafficking Project, the event featured a panel discussion with human trafficking survivor leaders and advocates.
“Human trafficking could happen to anyone, anywhere at any time,” Nessel said during the event.
During the event, attendees met with representatives from the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission, learned about human trafficking and current anti-trafficking legislation, and networked with regional partners.
Melissa Palepu, chair of the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission and assistant attorney general, said Michigan ranks in the top 10 nationally for human trafficking.
“There’s like 600 and some tips that come out of Michigan,” Palepu said. “But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. And so, and literally, it’s just the tip. And we all know that the iceberg, the bulk of it is underwater, right? It’s unknown.”
