Attorney discusses ‘Litigating Bail from Arraignment to Appeal’ Dec. 2
The Criminal Defense Association of Michigan will present the webinar “Litigating Bail from Arraignment to Appeal” on Wednesday, December 2, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
The Civil Rights Corps will lead a training and conversation on bail, pretrial detention, and how to best advocate for a client’s pretrial release. The training will cover federal and state law concerning bail and pretrial release, including best practices for bail advocacy from a client’s first appearance to challenging an unlawful detention order on appeal. Civil Rights Corps is a national organization that specializes in combating unlawful pretrial detention and cash bail policies, with legal victories throughout the country.
Takeaways include:
• Understanding key constitutional principles that protect against pretrial detention and unaffordable cash bail.
• Understanding Michigan state law on bail and pretrial detention.
• Understanding the process of litigating a bail appeal and how to reach out to CRC for free pro bono support in doing so.
• Understand how to actually use the law to effectively advocate at bail.
Speaking at the webinar will be Ale Clark-Ansani, an attorney at Civil Rights Corps where he works on challenging unconstitutional pretrial detention and policing practices. He is the lead attorney on CRC’s Michigan Bail Project, which seeks to train public defenders and criminal defense attorneys on litigating bail appeals and partnering with them to change the culture and practices around bail statewide.
Cost for the webinar is $60 for CDAM members and $75 for non-members. To register, visit https://cdam.wildapricot.org.
